Guests often arrive late, early or from far away. Self check-in lets them enter on their own while you stay in control. A video intercom and a smart lock are the two devices that make it practical.

The basic idea

The guest rings at the door, you see them on your phone, speak with them and open the door remotely, or you send them a personal code in advance. Everything is recorded in the app, so you know who came and when.

Video intercom: what it does

Shows who is at the door on your phone or on an indoor screen.
Lets you talk with the guest in both directions.
Sends an alert when someone rings or moves in front of the camera.
Some models work with WiFi, others with a cable for a more stable connection in buildings with several units.

Smart lock: what it does

Opens with a code, a card, a fingerprint or the app, depending on the model.
Lets you create a temporary code for each stay.
Removes the need to hand over physical keys.

What to check before you buy

Your door and lock type: check that the device fits your door and any local building rules.
Power: battery, mains or cable (PoE) installation.
Connection: WiFi coverage at the door, or a wired option.
Storage: local memory card or cloud recording, and what it costs over time.
App: a clear app that you and your co-host can use easily.

Respect guests' privacy and the rules

Cameras should point at the entrance, not at private areas. Tell guests in your listing and house rules that a camera is at the door. Local rules on guest registration and recording differ, so check them for your area.
